Format a USB drive for Yatour as FAT32 on Windows or Mac

The CD01 folders are ready, but nothing plays? Check the drive’s filesystem. Yatour instructions often specify FAT or FAT32. A drive using exFAT or NTFS may still fail with correctly named folders. Here is how to check it and change it if needed.

In this guide
  1. Check first — you may not need to erase anything
  2. Save your files before formatting
  3. Windows: use File Explorer
  4. Mac: use Disk Utility
  5. If Windows does not offer FAT32
  6. What to copy afterwards

Check first — you may not need to erase anything

On Windows, open This PC, right-click the drive and choose Properties. Look for File system. On Mac, select the drive in Disk Utility and check the volume information.

If it is already FAT32 and meets your adapter’s requirements, do not format just to try something. Start with a few MP3s and the right folders. A drive’s filesystem and a song’s audio format are separate things: formatting does not convert a song.

Save your files before formatting

Formatting removes everything from the selected drive. Copy anything you need to your computer and check that the copies open. Then double-check the drive name and capacity so you do not erase another disk.

These steps are for a separate USB drive that meets your Yatour’s requirements. Formatting does not make an unsupported capacity compatible or turn a 64 GB drive into something every model can read.

Windows: use File Explorer

  1. Connect the drive. Open File Explorer with Win + E, then This PC.
  2. Find the correct drive by name and capacity. Right-click it and choose Format.
  3. Choose FAT32 under File system. If it is missing, close the window and read the section below. Do not substitute exFAT.
  4. Leave Allocation unit size at its default. Check the selected drive again and make sure your files are backed up.
  5. Select Start and confirm the data deletion. Wait for completion, then check that Properties lists FAT32.

Mac: use Disk Utility

  1. Connect the drive. Open Disk Utility through Spotlight or Applications → Utilities.
  2. Choose View → Show All Devices. Find the external USB drive by model and capacity, not the Mac’s internal disk.
  3. Select the device and choose Erase. For an ordinary drive of up to 32 GB, choose MS-DOS (FAT) under Format. If your adapter specifically requires FAT32, check the resulting volume format afterwards: MS-DOS (FAT) names a family of FAT formats.
  4. If your adapter’s instructions require MBR, choose Master Boot Record under Scheme. If Scheme is missing, check that you selected the device rather than a volume within it. MBR is not a universal requirement for every model.
  5. Use a short name such as MUSIC. Check your backup, choose Erase and wait until it finishes.

If Windows does not offer FAT32

For larger drives, File Explorer may list only exFAT and NTFS. That is a limitation of this formatting method, not proof of what Yatour can read.

For an initial test, a smaller drive that meets your manual’s requirements is simpler. Do not choose exFAT at random or install an unknown formatting tool. This guide does not repartition drives or give commands that could erase the wrong disk.

What to copy afterwards

Prepare a small selection on yatour.site, download the ZIP and extract it. Copy CD01, CD02 and the other CD folders directly onto the drive, without an enclosing Music folder. Safely eject it and test while parked.

If it still fails, avoid formatting over and over. Check skipped tracks, adapter requirements and another suitable drive. The site does not format drives or write directly to them.
